Taking CB Mako’s poem ‘In the air’, which recalls the writer’s own experiences with ableism as inspiration, Flamiano has collaborated with leading deaf poet and performer, Walter Kadiki to translate the original text into a powerful AUSLAN video.

2016, Just visiting, Tace Kelly, Jacqui Gordon, MJ Flamiano, Opens Spaces - Abbotsford Convent

A collaboration between Jacqui Gordon, Tace Kelly, and MJ Flamiano; the artists presented a performance at Abbotsford Convent as part of their exhibition, I was not informed.

In Just visiting, each artist took their turn performing the role of ‘the artist’, ‘the volunteer’ and ‘the marketer’ to produce a series of flags, objects and signage. Satirising the power dynamics inherent in waged and unwaged artistic labour and performed for visiting members of the public.

A collaboration between Jacqui Gordon, Tace Kelly, and MJ Flamiano, this project engaged two LOTE groups - Japanese native and non-Japanese fluent speakers and Chinese Mandarin native and non-Chinese fluent speakers to translate a text written in English.

The text titled, Please lower your voice, constitutes critical and poetic prose written by the artists in response to ‘casually racist’ comments overhead in City Library, which is a common meeting place for ESL students and Melbourne tourists.
